Grandma’s Apple Crisp

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter or grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the apple filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and spread in an even layer.
  3. Make the crisp topping: In a medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingers, a fork, or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in nuts if using.
  4. Assemble: Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple mixture, covering the apples completely.
  5. Bake: Place in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling at the edges.
  6. Cool: Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Serve: Enjoy warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect homestyle dessert.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, try adding a pinch of clove or cardamom to the apple mixture
  • The crisp will keep covered at room temperature for 2-3 days, or refrigerated for up to 5 days
  • To reheat, place in a 350°F oven for 15 minutes or microwave individual portions

Enjoy this classic comfort dessert that tastes just like grandma used to make!
