Homemade Doughnuts

There’s nothing quite like the taste of freshly made doughnuts from a bakery—crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside. But when you can’t visit your favorite doughnut shop, why not recreate that indulgence at home? Making doughnuts has been a personal baking goal of mine, and today I’m diving deep into the process of making classic fried doughnuts—sugary, comforting, and nostalgic. Originally shared in 2016, this recipe now includes updated step-by-step photos and a video tutorial to guide you along the way.

Let me walk you through the process, so you’ll feel confident as you make your own doughnuts. Although homemade glazed doughnuts might seem intimidating at first, they’re actually easier than you’d think! In fact, I find them simpler than homemade bagels or English muffins.

How to Make Homemade Doughnuts:

Prepare the Dough: Using a mixer, the dough comes together easily. You can also make it by hand, but it will take a bit more effort. Once mixed, knead the dough for 5–7 minutes. If you’re unfamiliar with working with yeast dough, check out my post on how to knead dough for tips and guidance.
Roll & Cut the Doughnuts: Roll the dough out to about ½-inch thickness. Use a 3 to 3.5-inch doughnut cutter to cut out the doughnuts. Place them (including the doughnut holes!) onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper or silicone mats. Cover lightly and let them rest for 30 minutes while you heat the oil.
