We first tried poor man’s hamburger steaks when we were driving around Philadelphia with family and stopped in at Reading Terminal Market when there was an Amish vendor there. There was something about the gravy-covered hamburger steaks that was so simple, yet so comforting and fulfilling that we knew it had immediately become a recipe we would try to recreate on our own and would end up coming back to again and again.
Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
🍔 Ingredients:
1. 5 lbs ground beef
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups milk, divided
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4-5 medium Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
🍔 Instructions:
1. Preheat Oven: Preheat to 375°F and grease a 9×13 inch dish.
2. Season Beef: Mix ground beef with garlic, onion powders, salt, and pepper; form into 6 patties.
3. Brown Patties: In a skillet, brown the patties; set aside.
4. Make Gravy: Whisk 1 cup milk with flour in the skillet, then add remaining milk to create gravy.
5. Layer: In the dish, layer half the potatoes and onions, then add the patties, remaining potatoes, onions, and pour gravy on top.
6. Bake: Cover and bake for 1 hour. Uncover, add cheese, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until bubbly.
