Smothered Hamburger Steak

“An easy-to-make classic featuring tasty hamburger ‘steaks’ smothered in gravy and onions. Traditionally served with hot white rice or potatoes, it’s a great way to dress up a pound of ground beef and you probably have all the ingredients on hand!”

As a child, even when I was outside playing I knew when we were having hamburger steak for dinner. The smell of those savory onions and beefy gravy always made it’s way outdoors. Probably from us kids running in and out nonstop. It was one of my favorite meals.

It was always served with mashed potatoes or rice since those really are the best with brown gravy! Sweet peas just complimented the savoriness so well.

Now I’m not talking about Salisbury steak (which uses egg and often breadcrumbs), which is also another favorite of mine.

To Make this Recipe You’Il Need the following ingredients:

Smothered Hamburger Steak
Ingredients
0/8 Ingredients
Adjust Servings
1 pound lean ground beef
1 pound ground sausage I prefer Jimmy Dean original
1 tsp seasoned salt I use Season-All

8 ounces fresh mushrooms washed and sliced
1/4 to 1/2 cups AP flour
1 quart beef stock homemade or commercial or water
1/2 to 1 tsp seasoned salt

Instructions

Step 1Mix all ingredients well and form 8 equal size patties.
Step 2Heat a large skillet. Place the patties in the skillet. Don’t crowd. They’ll shrink down some. If the patties don’t sizzle when placed in the pan, then the pan isn’t hot enough. Brown well on both sides. Remove and set aside.
Step 3Add onions and mushrooms to hot skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until the volume of vegetables has reduced by half. Add more cooking oil if necessary.
Step 4Add enough flour to the pan to soak up all the grease. Keep stirring until the grease and flour is well incorporated and the white is gone.
Step 5Slowly add liquid stirring or whisking constantly until all the liquid has been added. Keep stirring or whisking until the gravy starts to thicken.
Step 6Add the patties back in the pan. Spoon the gravy over the patties. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
Step 7Taste the gravy for seasoning and adjust as needed.
Step 8When done, remove the patties to a bowl and pour the gravy over. Granny served them in a bowl that looked very similar to the one I have.
Step 9Southern-Style Hamburger Steaks with Onion Mushroom Gravy. 3 ingredients hamburger steaks cooked in a flavorful onion mushroom gravy.
